UK Vehicle Insurance Guide

Types of vehicle insurance

Third Party
    This covers:
  • Liability for injuries to other people, including passengers
  • Liability for damage to other people's property
  • Liability for passengers or accidents caused by them
  • Liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the vehicle
Third Party Fire and Theft
As above plus fire or theft coverage. Be aware:
  • If your vehicle is not normally kept in a garage overnight, then theft cover may be excluded or subject to conditions.
  • You may have to pay an excess following an incident or theft.
  • You may not be covered if your vehicle is taken from you by deception, so make sure that if you are selling your vehicle that you receive proper payment before parting with it
Comprehensive
    As both of above plus:
  • Accidental damage to your own vehicle. May be subject to an excess charge.
  • A personal accident benefit. Certain amounts are paid in the event of the death or specific permanent disablement of the policyholder - and sometimes his or her spouse or family member.
  • Medical expenses necessarily incurred, up to a stated limit.
  • Loss or damage to personal effects in the vehicle, up to a stated limit.
