UK Vehicle Insurance Guide

In the event of an accident

Remember, the more information you get the better you are prepared to make a claim.

  • Witnesses: get names and addresses of independant witnesses before they lose intest.
  • The scene: if you have a camera in the vehicle then take some pictures of the scene before any vehicles are moved. Also, make a sketch of the scene while the details are fresh in your mind.
  • Involved drivers: get there names, addresses, registration numbers, vehicle make and model, the name of their insurers and, if possible, their policy number or certificate number.
  • Injuries: if anyone is injured then you must produce your certificate of insurance at the time or at a police station within 24 hours. You are required to give your name and address, the name and address of the vehicle owner, and the registration number to anyone wanting them. Obtain details of anyone injured in the accident.
  • Police: if police are involved then obtain the officers name, log number, station details and crime reference, if applicable
  • Statements: tell your insurers about any statements made at the scene. You should absolutely not discuss whose fault it was, this can create problems for you and your insurers when handling the claim.
  • Insurers: you must inform your insurers even if you have no intention of making a claim. This is a condition of your policy.
  • Report form: ask your insurers for a report form and fill out as much information as you can.
